Shah Becomes First International Champion, Bryant Claims Girls’ Title at DJ World Junior

Arrow Aarav Shah (Melbourne, Australia) became the first international winner of the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, while Kayla Bryant (Boca Raton, Fla.) held off a late charge to claim the girls’ title at TPC Myrtle Beach.

Arrow ShahOn a cool, breezy Sunday, Shah took the drama out of the boys’ event with a rock-solid round of 73, good enough to finish at 3-under, four strokes ahead of second-place finishers Sohan Patel (Weston, Fla.) and Tyler Mawhinney (Fleming Island, Fla.). His only hiccup, a double bogey on the par-3 seventh, was answered with a birdie on TPC’s most demanding hole, the par-4 ninth.

Only two players broke par on a difficult day for scoring – Jessy Huebner’s (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) 70 was the round of the day – highlighting how impressive Shah’s game was playing from the lead. He played the back nine in even par 36, never allowing the field hope.

Bryant, who has verbally committed to play at Florida State, completed a wire–to-wire victory one shot ahead of Canadian Ann-Sophie Bourgault (Gatineau, Quebec), a future Indiana Hoosier.

For much of the round, it appeared as if Bryant would coast to a win. After she birdied the par-4 11th hole, she was five strokes clear of Bourgault, but she bogeyed four of the final seven holes, including Nos. 17 and 18, finishing the 54-hole event at 4-over par. Bourgault played the final nine holes in even par.

Ryleigh Knaub (Debary, Fla.), the 2023 DJ World Junior champion, shot 72, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 14th hole. The round was the best of the day in the girls’ field, allowing the future LSU Tiger to surge into third place with a final score of 5-over par.

Now in its 10th year, the Dustin Johnson World Junior continues to cement its status as one of golf’s premier youth events, producing stars such as Akshay Bhatia and Nick Dunlap, both of whom have already won on the PGA Tour. LPGA winner Alexa Pano, the only two-time champion in event history, is another testament to the tournament’s ability to showcase future stars.
