Founders Group International, the Dustin Johnson Golf School and Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday announce the Inaugural Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, a 54-hole tournament that will be played February 13-15 at TPC Myrtle Beach.
The invitational event will feature a 90-player field comprised of elite-level boys and girls from across the globe. With the support of Johnson, one of the top 10 players in the world, the tournament will provide participants with a PGA TOUR-like experience, and the chance to test themselves against their peers from other parts of the world.
TPC Myrtle Beach, the former host venue of the Senior PGA TOUR Championship, has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses and will provide a Tour-level challenge plus special participant amenities. The February date, which takes advantage of the Grand Strand’s sub-tropical climate, provides the juniors a chance to jump-start their 2016 season on President’s Day weekend.
“Junior golf was vital to my development as a player, and I’m excited to help launch an event that will grow into one of the nation’s premier tournaments,” said Johnson. “I lived in Myrtle Beach for nearly 10 years and still consider the area home, so I know it’s an ideal host for the event. I’ve played TPC Myrtle Beach more than any other course, and it will offer our competitors a great challenge.”
“We are thrilled to be partnering with Dustin, one of the world’s best, to launch the game’s next great junior event,” said Nick Dou, President of Founders Group International. “TPC Myrtle Beach, a top 100 calibre golf course, is an ideal host and will help us provide the best tournament experience in junior golf. We are looking forward to bringing golf’s next generation of stars to the ‘Golf Capital of the World’, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.”
Allen Terrell, Director of Instruction at the Dustin Johnson Golf School, said, “We will focus on attracting a world class field and providing Dustin Johnson World Junior Championship contestants an experience similar to what they will one day enjoy at high-level collegiate or even professional events.” Johnson’s involvement with the Championship reflects his long-time commitment to junior golf, particularly in South Carolina, where he grew into one of the world’s best. Through the Dustin Johnson Foundation, headquartered in Myrtle Beach, Dustin has donated more than $250,000 to junior golf, sponsoring numerous events throughout the state, and helping cover entry fees for kids who could not afford it.
Founders Group International is the foremost golf course owner-operator company in the Southeast. Formed in 2014 through various purchases and the 2015 acquisition of National Golf Management, Founders owns and operates 22 golf courses (423 holes) in and around Myrtle Beach, the worlds most popular golf destination. It also has a division that does residential and retail development, and has partnered with one of the biggest travel agencies in China to bring golfers and wedding parties to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The Dustin Johnson Golf School opened at TPC Myrtle Beach in 2013, offering a complete golf training facility, and is the only school in the area to offer a PGA & LPGA instructor. The school is headed by Allen Terrell, a world leader in player development. In January, Former Mrs. South Carolina and Golf Magazine’s 2015 Innovator of the Year, Meredith Kirk, LPGA started as a Lead Instructor at the School. A graduate of Coastal Carolina University, where Dustin went as well, Kirk has been an active advocate for growing the game of golf. Her ‘Innovator’ award was for her creation of the Junior Golf Exchange, a non profit organization that helps children under the age of 14 receive fitted golf equipment at no cost.
